Back and neck

Disc herniation, low back pain, neck pain: understand before treating.

Back or neck pain that radiates into the leg or arm is worrying, and rightly so. We sort out what needs a doctor and what can be treated with physiotherapy, then we act on pain and on function.

Your situation
  • Recurring low back or neck pain, sometimes radiating into the leg or arm.
  • Tingling, or difficulty sitting, driving, lifting or training.
  • An MRI that mentions a herniation or a bulge, without knowing what it means for you.
The assessment

The assessment is thorough: a study of your case and your imaging, a neurological and functional examination, and screening for signs that call for prompt medical advice. Dr Massimo Donalisio, FMH radiologist, can review your MRI on site when a second reading is useful.

Assessment tools
  1. UltrasoundLatest-generation high-resolution ultrasound, to see the tendon, muscle or joint and to guide the procedure.
  2. Infrared thermographyAn image of surface heat, to identify asymmetries and follow how they change over the course of treatment.
  3. Advanced testingStrength, mobility, motor control and sporting technique, measured and compared at each reassessment.
  4. Review of your scansMRI, X-rays and reports, with the support of the FMH radiologist where useful.
The pathway

Assess, treat, measure.

  1. 01Neurological and functional assessment, imaging review
  2. 02Treatment of pain and of the nerve component
  3. 03Rehabilitation: motor control, strength, return to everyday and sporting movements
  4. 04Reassessment and adjustment of the plan
Technologies and care

Our technologies

The choice of techniques follows from the assessment. Not all of them suit everyone; that is precisely what the assessment establishes.

When to seek urgent care

Progressive loss of strength in a leg, urinary problems or loss of sensation in the perineal area require you to see a doctor or the emergency services (144) immediately.

Autonomy and network

Our physiotherapists lead your care autonomously, in coordination with the doctors and specialists who follow you. Where useful, and with your consent, we liaise with your doctor or specialists. At the clinic, Dr Massimo Donalisio, FMH radiologist specialised in interventional radiology, provides imaging review, second opinions and regenerative medicine procedures.

Frequently asked questions
Can a disc herniation be treated without surgery?

In the great majority of cases, care begins with conservative treatment. The decision to operate belongs to the doctor; we work with them when necessary.

Do I need an MRI before coming?

Not necessarily. If you have one, bring it. The assessment will show whether a further examination is useful.

Is physiotherapy reimbursed?

Yes, on medical prescription, by Swiss basic or accident insurance. Regenerative technologies are private services.

I am an athlete: when can I return?

The return happens in stages, with measured criteria. The written plan sets out the stages and the reassessment dates.
