Focused shockwave therapy · from December 2026

Focused shockwave therapy, guided by imaging.

Focused shockwaves concentrate their energy at depth, on a precise area. At the clinic, each session is preceded by localisation with latest-generation high-resolution ultrasound, to treat exactly the area involved.

Common indications
  • Tendinopathies: Achilles, patellar, shoulder, elbow, hip.
  • Calcific tendinopathy of the shoulder.
  • Plantar fasciopathy.
  • Osteoarthritis, combined with MBST® and rehabilitation.
The assessment

An assessment always precedes treatment. It confirms the indication, locates the area on ultrasound and sets the number of sessions. We use only focused shockwaves, with no radial module.

Focused, not radial

A deliberate technological choice.

Different physics

Radial waves, the most common in clinics, deliver their maximum energy at the surface and then disperse. Focused waves concentrate theirs at depth, on a precise point, up to more than ten centimetres below the skin.

Guided by imaging

Each session is preceded by localisation with latest-generation high-resolution ultrasound: the energy is directed at the area involved, not at an approximate zone.

STORZ MEDICAL, designed in Switzerland

The clinic is equipped with the STORZ MEDICAL DUOLITH® SD1 T-TOP ultra+, designed and made in Tägerwilen. Its very low energy levels also make it possible to treat the most sensitive areas.

Most practices offer radial waves. ITU Clinic has chosen to use ultrasound-guided focused shockwaves exclusively.

Assessment tools
  1. UltrasoundLatest-generation high-resolution ultrasound, to see the tendon, muscle or joint and to guide the procedure.
  2. Infrared thermographyAn image of surface heat, to identify asymmetries and follow how they change over the course of treatment.
  3. Advanced testingStrength, mobility, motor control and sporting technique, measured and compared at each reassessment.
  4. Review of your scansMRI, X-rays and reports, with the support of the FMH radiologist where useful.

Technologies and care

Our technologies

The choice of techniques follows from the assessment. Not all of them suit everyone; that is precisely what the assessment establishes.

Within a programme

Focused shockwave therapy is most often part of a regenerative programme set after assessment, alongside other technologies and exercise.

Autonomy and network

Our physiotherapists lead your care autonomously, in coordination with the doctors and specialists who follow you. Where useful, and with your consent, we liaise with your doctor or specialists. At the clinic, Dr Massimo Donalisio, FMH radiologist specialised in interventional radiology, provides imaging review, second opinions and regenerative medicine procedures.

Frequently asked questions
Is focused shockwave therapy painful?

The session can be uncomfortable; the intensity is continuously adjusted to your tolerance.

How many sessions?

It depends on the indication. The written plan provided after the assessment specifies it.

Is it reimbursed?

This is a private service; supplementary insurance may contribute depending on your policy. See the Fees and insurance page.
